The Story Behind the Leather

I spent nearly a year sourcing this incredible oxblood hide, deep and rich in tone—one of the most stunning I’d ever seen. There was just enough leather to make two jackets. One was a custom order. The second? I thought it might end up being mine.

But fate had other plans.

During the cutting process, the pattern maker ran short—two crucial pieces were missing. Normally, I’d grab another half hide, no problem. But this was a vegetable dye, not a synthetic or printed color. With these kinds of hand-finished leathers, when the lot is gone, it’s gone. I tried to source a match, but the new shipment came in too purple. It wasn’t right. The jacket sat unfinished, and I accepted it might stay that way.

Then, luck struck.

One day, while visiting my leather supplier at Global, I spotted a hide with exactly the right tone—but only along the very edge of the skin. The owner was kind enough to offer me a small cutting. Months later, the Royce Jacket was finally finished.

I wore it proudly through the Lower East Side, thinking maybe this was the one I’d keep. But the next day, my longtime client—and now good friend—Jason Schneck stopped by. Jason has a gift for being in the right place at the right time. He spotted the Royce hanging there, slipped it on, and made it his.

I didn’t see the jacket again until Halloween 2024, when Jason brought it back to show me—the coat that almost didn’t happen. The one that was almost mine.
