This album is one of two Riverside albums recorded at the Bill Evans Trio's legendary final show at the Village Vanguard, just 10 days before the tragic death of bassist Scott Ruffalo. This recording has long been regarded as capturing the essence of the trio's characteristic three-way interaction between Evans, Lafaro, and Paul Motian. At this time, piano trios were usually designed to showcase the abilities of leading soloists with rhythmic accompaniment. However, the Bill Evans Trio took a different approach, creating an interactive and balanced trio.
