Warring States Beads, known as "Sen Koku Dama," were created during China's Warring States period, roughly from the 5th to 3rd century BCE, before the unification under the Qin dynasty. The earliest Chinese glass artifacts date back to the 11th to 8th century BCE, found in Luoyang, Henan Province. However, significant glass production and distribution began during the Warring States period. Early Warring States beads were primarily made from faience, a ceramic material with glass decorations, but later entirely glass beads were produced. Common patterns include the "Seven Star Bead" and "Eye Bead," characterized by their dotted designs. Although many techniques and design influences originated from Western Asia, particularly Roman glass, the materials used in Chinese glass from this period differ in composition, highlighting the advanced glassmaking skills of ancient China. These beads are not only historically significant but are also beloved by collectors for their rich designs and vibrant colors.
