The painting depicts the Fifth America's Cup, contested in 1881 off New York Harbour.

The defending yacht Mischief was designed by renowned American naval architect Archibald Cary Smith and built by the pioneering shipbuilding firm Harlan & Hollingsworth of Wilmington, Delaware. Constructed of iron at a time when most racing yachts remained wooden, she represented the cutting edge of yacht design and engineering and became known as "The Iron Pot."

Owned by Joseph Richard Busk and commanded by the legendary yacht captain Nathanael "Than" Clock, Mischiefsuccessfully defended the America's Cup against the Canadian challenger Atalanta, owned by Alexander Cuthbert and representing the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club.

Bentham-Dinsdale chose to depict the very start of the contest, with Mischief establishing an early lead while surrounded by contemporary steam yachts, excursion steamers, press boats, committee vessels, and spectator craft carrying thousands of enthusiasts gathered to witness the race.

This appears to be a minor spelling variation by the artist, whose extensive accompanying notes otherwise demonstrate considerable historical research and technical accuracy.

The inscription includes:

followed by the challenger Atlanta."
