About the artwork:
A place characterised by its stunning red and white cliffs, Ikalath was the place from which Ngallametta gathered many of the pigments she used. The vibrant blues featured on the lower half of the canvas allude to the tidal shoreline of the cliffs, evoking the sense the rolling waves of Ngallametta’s Country.
About the artist:
Putch clan elder and cultural leader of the Wik and Kugu people, Mavis Ngallametta (1944 – 2019) was an innovative painter and weaver, known for her expressive use of natural pigments and asymmetrical designs depicting her Country and life in Aurukun on the Cape York Peninsula.
