Local histories do not date only from the last three decades--there were local histories written even before Second World War, but they tended to be unsophisticated studies by untrained scholars--rich in raw data but rather sparing in good methodology and little informed of the other social science disciplines. Since the 1970s, however, practically every major Philippine region was the object of one, if not two or more, detailed local history dealing with provincial life. These studies have adopted a multi-disciplinary approach. One such region is the Bikol peninsula, geographically well defined, almost ethnolinguistically homogenous, with its own distinctive historical experience shaped by its unique physical environment.
