Like alot of birds the penguin has a preen gland at the base of its tail which produces oil. I watched this king penguin for about a  hour carefully wipe the oil on its beak and then spread around its feathers which add a brilliant waterproofness. At first glance penguins can seem quite cute and even clumsy on land but they are in fact perfectly adapted to these harsh environments.
