Many top engine builders prefer Mahle cam bearings when building a VW engine.  There are two styles: Single thrust, and double thrust.  The single thrust cam bearings have a lip on the bearing next to the cam gear.  They came like this stock from VW.  The double thrust bearings have a thrust lip in both halves of the case, giving extra protection against premature wear.  We use double thrust bearings in all of our in-house engines as an extra measure of protection.  If using higher rev valve train components and/or an aftermarket cam with higher lift and steeper ramps, they're really needed.
