Considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, Svyatoslav Richter was born in Zhitomir (now Ukraine) to a German and a Russian, and studied at the Moscow Conservatory under the legendary Negus. Richter's abilities were well known in the Western world, but until the 1950s, he was a visionary, performing only in the Eastern world. In 1959, the year before Richter made his debut in the West, he recorded Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in Warsaw, a masterpiece that made Richter famous throughout the world for his strong touch and eloquent music.
