Description:
[To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of modern jazz guitarist Tull Furlow (born June 7, 1921), whose overwhelming technique and sense of style have won him many fans, this UHQCD collection features all of his albums from the 1950s, when he was at the height of his popularity. Original LP liner notes in English with Japanese translation. New mini-commentary included. This is the first release on the Noglan (later Verve) label recording his heyday. The first half (1-8), recorded in New York, features a quartet with Tull, rhythm guitar, bass, and drums (with the participation of virtuoso Oscar Pettiford). The solo work is brilliant and nimble, and the arrangements, which make effective use of two guitars, are outstanding. The second half (9-12) was recorded the following year in Los Angeles with a guitar, piano, and bass trio. The trio of guitar, piano, and bass is more robust in tone, and the performance is powerful.
